Do Now #18:

We’ve been talking (and you’ve been reading) about how Roman culture and language spread across Europe. For example, Latin mixed with regional dialects to create the French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese languages we know today.

Christianity is something that also spread widely as a result of the Empire’s expanse. Though it began in the Middle East, it was the Roman Empire making it the state religion that caused it to quickly spread across Europe within only a few hundred years. The Vatican City, the capital of the Catholic faith, is even located IN Rome!

A) Define: Cultural Diffusion
C) Answer the following summary questions:
  • What happened:
  • Where did it happen (label it on the map provided):
  • How devastating an event was it? List three examples from the article that support your response.
  • How is religion related to this article?
  • What religion, primarily, are people in the Philippines?

Consider your map:

D) Why is the Philippines, a country located halfway across the world from where Christianity started and from the center of where it spread from, the religion that they are? (This question takes some thought and effort on your part… where might you start? As a hint, you can figure out pretty much anything about a culture by looking at its history and geography. You’ve already looked at the geography!)
